Maca and Almond Overnight Otas

If you follow my instagram page, I'm guessing you will have realised I'm a huge overnight oats fan. This week I'm sharing with you one of my favourite overnight oats recipes and telling you exactly why the maca super-food is so good to add into your diet!

ABOUT

Maca is a type of root vegetable that belongs to the broccoli/radish family. It has a similar appearance to that of a turnip or radish, but is generally yellow in colour.

  1. Energy - most people will find that their mood, energy and stamina level will lift almost instantly.

  2. Memory - Enhances our ability to learn and process mentally, as well as making us more alert.

  3. Rich in Antioxidants - Maca acts as a natural antioxidant. Antioxidants help neutralise harmful free radicals, fighting off chronic disease and preventing damage to cells. 4. Diet Friendly - Maca is low in calories at only 10 calories per teaspoon.

  5. Improves and Increases Fertility and Sexual Health in both Men and Women

  6. Nutritious - Maca is an excellent source of protein, fibre and several vitamins. and minerals, including vitamin C, copper and iron. It also contains over 20 amino acids and contains many beneficial plant compounds, making it furthermore, a popular choice for the vegan diet.

WHAT DOES MACA TASTE LIKE AND HOW DO I USE IT?

Personally I think maca has a slightly nutty taste with a hint of butterscotch, which is why it works especially well when added to oatmeal and almonds. There are many different types of maca, which can adjust the flavour - so I would reccommend the cream-coloured maca root as it has a sweeter taste.

Maca is usually bought in powder form and can be bought in supermarkets, health shops and sometimes even pharmacies. The powder can be easily added to cereals, oats, smoothies, drinks or mixed into baking recipes.

Serves: 1. Preparation Time: 5 minutes

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats

  • 1/2 cup almond milk

  • 1 mashed banana

  • 1 tsp chia seeds

  • 1 tsp maca powder

  • 1 tsp Moroccan almond extract

  • Topping Ideas: Almond Butter, Banana, Cacao nibs and Almonds

METHOD

  1. The night before, add the oats, mashed banana, chia seeds, maca powder, almond extract and almond milk into a tub and stir until well combined. Seal in an airtight tub and leave in the fridge overnight (at least 6 hours).

  2. Pour oat mixture into a bowl and top with toppings of your choice.

Happy Eating!
