Last month, we spent 4 days in Malaga, Spain for a bit of winter sun and it was amazing! So let me give you a (non exhaustive) list of tips on what to see whilst you are there! We spent a leisurely 4 days here and Malaga could be done in a shorter time frame if needed!

WHERE TO STAY

We stayed in a lovely air-bnb service apartment in the heart of the old town which was excellent for being close to all the attractions. Click here for the link.

WHEN TO VISIT

The great thing about Malaga is it is protected by a surrounding of mountains making it warm all year round! We went in January where the highs would be 20 degrees! It is an all year round destination to visit!

TRAVEL

To get to Malaga, simply fly to Malaga airport and you can either get the public bus straight to the city centre or arrange a private transfer. The journey is only 15-20 minutes.

WHERE TO VISIT

  • Malaga Old Town - we loved wandering round the old town and getting lost through all the little alleyways!

  • Alcazaba de Malaga - one of the most beautiful Alcazaba's you can visit in Spain, built by the Arabs when they used to occupy Spain definitely worth doing!

  • Castillo de Gibralfaro - the fortress that dominates the city, a steep walk up but worth doing!

  • Malaga Roman Theatre - free to see!

  • Mirador de Gibralfaro - an amazing view over the city and the best place to watch then sunset!

  • Malaga Catherdral (Santa Iglesia Catedral Basilica de la Encarnacion de Malaga)

  • Malaga Park

  • Mercado Central de Atarazanas - an amazing food market with the freshest food! We tried the olives, strawberries and a fresh pork baguette!

  • Playa la Malagueta - the closest beach to Malaga which is the perfect sunrise spot! From here you can do a lovely coastal walk which we enjoyed doing for an afternoon!

  • Palmeral de Ld Sorpresas - Malaga port promenade which has a lovely market and lots of cafes and restaurants!

  • Caminto Del Rey -an excellent day trip walking the Caminito Del Rey which used to be one of the world's most dangerous walking routes! Here are some tips!

    • We completed it through an organised tour which picked us up from Malaga city centre and organised our tickets etc. When we were walking, the tour group gave us the option of walking all together or you could go off by yourself.

    • If organising yourself, you can access the trail by hire car or train. You need to buy tickets in advance and ensure that your transport matches up with the time of your entry/exit of the walk.

    • The journey from Malaga is about 1 hour

    • The route is an easy walk and fairly flat most of the way with a few stairs and steps

    • It takes 2-3hours to complete

    • You have to wear a helmet at all times due to the risk of falling rocks

    • If you have vertigo or a large fear of heights then please research thoroughly before you go to make sure this is for you.

    • It can be windy, so make sure all valuables are tucked away.

    • There are no toilets or amenities during the walk but they are available at the start and end of the route.

    • Try the fresh orange juice at one of the kiosks at the end - it changed my world

WHERE TO EAT

Malaga has such an amazing food scene and unfortunately we couldn't try everywhere - but here are some of the places we tried and loved!

  • Ana La Fantastica - an excellent bakery and brunch spot!

  • La Terraza Molina Lario - a rooftop bar which looks over the cathedral and the coast (there is also no minimum spend at this one which is why we chose it!)

  • Churreria La Malaguena - the place to go for authentic churros!

  • Casa Lola - a chill good vibe restaurant known for it's pinchos!

  • Picasso Bar Tapas - excellent tapas and paella!

  • Pepa y Pepe - great paella and sangria!

  • 100 Montaditos - cheap and tasty eats with most items around 2 euro!

  • Granier - a good coffee and sandwich, cake or pastry stop

  • Mercado Central de Atarazanas - see what you fancy at this Market (only open till 2pm so its a breakfast or lunch stop!)

Happy Travelling!
